“Express Yourself: Youth Edition” will be hosted on Saturday, December 3, 2022, from 1PM to 3PM at the Refugee Welcome Center. With the guidance of the Refugee Welcome Center, our intention for this event is to host an art therapy session for a group of young adults within their network, for whom they host regular community programs. While In Our Own Voices hosts the art therapy session, representatives of the Refugee Welcome Center will guide their young adults through a conversation about what they all think they are currently surviving, the coping mechanisms that they are currently using, and the activities that they hope to see in their community so that we can all heal together in some way through future collaborations. Our intention for this event is to introduce our collaboration to their young adults so that we can develop larger projects for our next Sankofa Learning Series. In regards to the aspect of an art therapy session, we hope to provide the youth with canvases, paint, and paintbrushes so that they can create pieces that best reflect who they are, along with providing chalk so that they can write messages of support for survivors in our community.
